Dot NAME Domain Names

Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level domain names remained functional.
